F/T BARN ASSISTANT

FULL-TIME BARN ASSISTANT



SUMMARY


This employee will work with staff and volunteer teams to ensure the daily needs of all horses at the rescue while maintaining a positive work environment and a facility that is clean, safe and professional. Horse handling experience, strong work ethic, and love of being a part of a team are a must. Present during emergencies as needed, as well as on-site or major off-site events. The 40+ hours/week includes one weekend day and four weekdays.





DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES





Horse Rescue, Rehabilitation & Husbandry


Assist in and oversee the care of 60+ horses.

  • Identify/interpret/treat medical conditions under the direction of the Manager
  • Assist with triage during emergencies
  • Feed management
  • Handling horses safely and positively
  • Barn Chores (mucking, waters, etc)
  • Work additional hours as needed during case seizures, emergencies, critical care, etc.

Farm and Facility Care


Keep farm and facility clean and in a safe fashion to ensure safety and positive appearance.


Customer/Client/Public Service & Relations

  • Interact with the public of all ages in a friendly manner
  • Ensure open and positive communication between staff and volunteers by being friendly, giving positive feedback, and handling conflict/complaints properly
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all volunteers, staff, and animals

Culture Retention & Advocacy

  • Exemplify compassion and empathy towards the animals in our care and the situations they came from
  • Encourage a welcoming and mission-passionate environment
  • Take initiative and be a team player
  • Professionally represent HWH at all times


REQUIREMENTS





Qualifications/Training Required

  • Previous hands-on experience with equine, including handling, management, care and husbandry preferred
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships. Willing to ensure completion of necessary tasks in the absence of volunteer staff
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and have a strong work ethic
  • Good communication, organization, and prioritization skills

Physical Activity Requirements

  • Physical ability to perform manual, sometimes demanding, labor including walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting: wheelbarrows, hay bales, bags of feed, water troughs, and various other farm supplies and equipment
  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force often to move objects
  • Close visual acuity to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work assigned, the ability to make observations on changes with the horses
  • Strong oral communication skills with the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions
